Whether you are a new Ross Vet student or a guest of a new or current student, this section contains information on traveling around St. Kitts.
Location and Airport
St. Kitts is located in the Leeward Islands at the northern end of the Lesser Antilles, approximately 220 miles southeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Our airport is the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport (SKB) located just northeast of the capital, Basseterre. Passenger carriers include Air Canada, American Airlines, British Airways, Delta Air Lines, LIAT and United Airlines. The airport also provides facilities for cargo and private jets.
Student Arrival and Dates
Upon arrival, new students are greeted at the airport by professional staff from the Department of Housing and Orientation Leaders. Students receive a welcome packet, are transported with their luggage to their new island residence to settle in, and taken to grocery stores and other businesses. For more information, please visit preparing to move to St. Kitts.
Public Transportation in St. Kitts
Local public transportation is available in St. Kitts via a privately-run minibus system. There are two main routes comprising of West Side and East Side. The West Side route starts in Basseterre, passes by the RUSVM campus, and ends at Dieppe Bay. There are set prices for the buses, around $3.00 EC. Taxis are also available.
Other Transportation Options
Although St. Kitts is a small island, having transportation is still important. Most students, staff and faculty purchase cars after their arrival to the island. Others purchase scooters. Driving is on the left hand side of the road, and a license from your home country is required to obtain a St. Kitts driver's license. Remember to adhere to the speed limits and follow all other local traffic laws.
For complete details on how to buy a car, obtain a license and auto insurance, please visit preparing to move to St. Kitts.
Visiting St. Kitts
Special rates are offered at various hotels for Ross Vet family and visitors (must be booked directly, not through a travel agency; rates quoted subject to change). Car rentals are available for visitors to the island. It is necessary to obtain a driver's permit before you can drive in St. Kitts, even if you have a driver's license from your home country.
Nevis can be accessed via ferry. The ferry ride takes about 45 minutes from the Ferry Terminal in Basseterre, or can be accessed from the Southeast Peninsula, taking 30 minutes via the Sea Bridge (car ferry) in St. Kitts. View the St. Kitts and Nevis Ferry schedule for times.
Visitors to campus must obtain a visitor's ID badge. Visit the Safety and Security office in the Student Union for details and instructions.
