RUSVM Research Centers

RUSVM's Research Centers advance the productivity and standing of research and training, supporting an informed educational program for our students. Our Research Centers are the primary avenues through which RUSVM interacts nationally, regionally and globally.

The portfolio of our Centers project RUSVM’s strategic intent of research excellence and contribute to the research culture of RUSVM, including training and mentoring doctor of veterinary medicine students and postgraduate students. Each Center comprises a group of leading researchers working collaboratively in a clearly defined field of inquiry.

Research Strategy

RUSVM provides a learning environment that can prepare our students to become leaders in the worldwide public and professional healthcare team supported by a research-informed educational experience. Our research is focused on advancing human and animal health through a transdisciplinary approach as part of RUSVM’s Research Center themes.

Research Vision

The tropical world’s economy is growing 20% faster than the rest of the world, but more than two thirds of the world’s poorest people live in the Tropics. By 2050, more than 50% of the world’s population is expected to reside in the Tropics – facing tremendous challenges from established and emerging diseases, poor education, and rural poverty.

RUSVM aims to be one of the leading training and research centers in the equatorial region, leveraging its unique location, research expertise and facilities to attract students and research scholars from around the globe. The approach will be transdisciplinary - The focus will be One Health.

Research Center Themes

One Health Center for Zoonoses and Tropical Veterinary Medicine

Integrative Mammalian Research

Conservation Medicine and Ecosystem Health

Research and Innovation in Veterinary and Medical Education

Goals & Success Measures

Our overall goals to achieve and sustain this vision are two-fold involving the creation of an enabling, dynamic research environment whilst effectively maximizing our external resources and strategic partnerships with other institutions, professions, and beyond.

Strategic Plan 2014-2018

Create an Enabling, Dynamic Research Environment

1. Become a global center for transdisciplinary One Health research, located in the Caribbean servicing other areas of the tropics
2. Place One Health researchers at the core of the veterinary curriculum to maximize impact on education
3. Attract top international researchers, students and funding
4. Ensure that effective operational infrastructure and management processes support delivery of results
5. Communicate expectations clearly to faculty with regards to research outputs

Effectively Maximize External Resources and Strategic Partnerships

1. Forge strategically relevant collaborations and partnerships with universities and research organizations around the world to maximize opportunities and outcomes at each institution
2. Promote RUSVM Research
3. Achieve financial sustainability of our research activities
4. Engage and bring together diverse partners and stakeholders to identify critical knowledge gaps and promote research that can generate new ideas and solutions

Center Descriptions and Publications 2016

  • One Health Center for Zoonoses and Tropical Veterinary Medicine

    Interim Director:

Souvik Ghosh, Associate Professor, Infectious Diseases

Zoonoses, vector-borne and other tropical infectious diseases affect livestock production as well as human and animal health and well-being including livelihoods. RUSVM is committed to a One Health, transdisciplinary approach to understanding and combating these diseases as it provides a collaborative, cross-sectoral and multidisciplinary integrative mechanism to enable research aimed at sustainably reducing their burden.

The Center focuses on a variety of research methods, from the laboratory to the field, to investigate issues concerning emerging, re-emerging as well as persisting endemic infectious diseases in consideration of nationally, regionally and internationally recognized priorities and critical research gaps.

The Center places special focus on the growing problem of anthelmintic and antimicrobial resistance, assessing and developing strategies to mitigate resistance development in pathogens, as well as exploring new, innovative ways of control. Additionally, the Center focuses on the interlinked issues of food security and safety. Special emphasis is placed on research aimed at optimizing health management of priority livestock (i.e. small ruminants and swine) and fish as an important way of increasing food security by ensuring higher yields of meat and fish. Food for humans and animals should not only be secure but also safe for consumption thus the Center also conducts research aimed at investigating and ensuring the safety of foods of animal origin for human consumption as well as the safety of feed for animal consumption including food-borne pathogens and toxins.

    Focus Areas:

Zoonotic, Vector-Borne and Other Tropical Infectious Disease
    Antimicrobial and Anthelmintic Resistance
Health Management of Priority Livestock and FishFood and Feed Safety

  • Center for Conservation Medicine and Ecosystem Health

A broad, inter-disciplinary ensemble of biomedical professionals recognize the complex interplay of altered environments and infectious diseases as an increasing threat to agriculture, public health and endangered/threatened species, on a global basis. To this end, the Center for Conservation Medicine and Ecosystem Health focuses upon applied research, renewed advocacy, educational outreach and training, and evidence translation towards best practices and policy change as a fundamental basis for surveying and managing the health of populations, communities, and ecosystems.

Collaborations with veterinarians, ecologists, wildlife biologists, physicians, conservationists, and other professionals play a critical role in setting priorities and providing novel solutions to complex ecological issues operative among aquatic, semi-aquatic, and terrestrial habitats.
