Dr. Mary Anna Thrall was a small animal practitioner for four years after receiving her DVM degree. Following her residency in clinical pathology, she was a faculty member in the Department of Pathology at Colorado State University for 32 years, where she helped train 42 veterinary clinical pathologists. She joined RUSVM in 2010 as a full time Professor of Veterinary Clinical Pathology. She is active in continuing education to veterinarians and pathologists and has provided more than 300 scientific presentations and continuing education programs. She is author or co-author of numerous scientific publications, abstracts, proceedings, and book chapters, and is the primary author of a clinical pathology textbook, Veterinary Hematology and Clinical Chemistry.

Research
Dr. Thrall's research interests over the last 30 years have been in the areas of bone marrow transplantation as therapy for feline models of lysosomal storage disorders, characterization of feline models of lysosomal storage diseases, including the mucopolysaccharidoses and Niemann Pick C1 disease, and treatment of ethylene glycol toxicosis in dogs and cats. Her current area of research is the role of lymphocytes in canine monocytic ehrlichiosis.
Achievements
She served as the president of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (2006-2007) and The American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology (1984-1985). She also served as Head of the Department of Biomedical Sciences at RUSVM for three years.
Dr. Thrall’s awards include the Association for Women Veterinarians Distinguished Service Award (1987), a CSU Distinguished Faculty Award (1988), the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine Distinguished Alumna Award (2004) and the American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology Lifetime Achievement Award, 2008. She was named a “Pillar of Pathology” by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists in 2012, and was the recipient of the National Pfizer (Zoesis) AAVMC Distinguished Teaching Award, in 2013.
