Born in Costa Rica, Dr. Ricardo Gutiérrez graduated as Clinical Microbiologist from the University of Costa Rica in 2011. Dr. Gutiérrez thesis focused on the emergence of antimicrobial resistance in environmental bacteria exposed to the agroindustry (i.e., porcine, poultry and aquaculture farms). For this work, he obtained the maximal grade receiving an “Honorary Distinction” by his thesis committee.
In 2012, Dr. Gutiérrez moved to Israel to be enrolled in the Master’s program (MSc) of Animal and Veterinary Sciences at the Koret School of Veterinary Medicine of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, receiving a full scholarship. In 2013, he obtained the “Dean´s List of Outstanding Student Award” for his astonishing performance in his MSc program. At the end of 2013, Dr. Gutiérrez started his Ph.D. degree, studying the genomic diversity and evolution of the slow-growing bacteria Bartonella. In 2018, upon his doctorate graduation, Dr. Gutiérrez received the prestigious “Hans Wiener Prize” for excellency in his doctorate dissertation (top 10 dissertations of 2018) and was recognized as “Outstanding Talent” by the National Academy of Science of Costa Rica.
From 2018-2020, Dr. Gutiérrez served as a post-doctoral fellow at the Koret School of Veterinary Medicine. His postdoctoral research studied the emergence and evolution of resistant bacteria during antimicrobial treatment. Upon his return to Costa Rica in 2020, Dr. Gutiérrez served as lecturer and researcher at the Faculty of Microbiology at the University of Costa Rica and worked as microbiologist and bioinformatician at the National Reference Laboratory for Bacteriology from Costa Rica, where he oversaw the genomic surveillance of antimicrobial resistance mechanisms and the data analyses for epidemiological surveillance of pathogens of public health importance.
By 2024, Dr. Gutiérrez is the author and co-author of 40 peer-reviewed international scientific papers, with over 1000 citations, and is an ad hoc reviewer of several indexed scientific journals. He has participated and presented his works in over 10 international conferences, workshops, and trainings all over the globe, including countries such as The United States, Australia, China, France, Greece, The Netherlands, Romania, Spain, Israel and Turkey.
