A promising group of high school students is better equipped to prepare for the upcoming CSEC Science examinations, thanks to the donation of a Science Lab by Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM) to the Basseterre High School.
The University, with support from its parent company Adtalem Global Education, partnered with the Ministry of Education to fully refurbish the space, and upgrade the lab’s materials and equipment. The project began as an idea by two students from RUSVM who saw a need to give back to the local community and support the development of young scientists in the making. Elroy Williams, a past student of the Basseterre High School and a current clinical year Rossie along with Alfred Tam who is also in his clinical year spearheaded the efforts to address the school’s challenges.
“Last year two of our students, Elroy Williams and Alfred Tam brought the idea of giving back to this school to us. Our University engaged stakeholders in many discussions … and partnered with The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis to jointly renovate this space into a high-end chemistry lab. We are proud of the quality work that was completed by all partners and of our students who continue to hold the best interest of this nation to heart.” Dr. Sean Callanan, Dean, RUSVM.
During the handover ceremony held on November 20, 2018, The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, the Honorable Shawn Richards, lauded the University’s gracious donation and long-standing partnership with the Government of St. Kitts-Nevis. The Minister also thanked the University for giving back.
“Thank you for partnering with the Ministry of Education, to provide (students) with an upgraded Chemistry lab, materials, and equipment to be utilized in the lab.”
RUSVM Dean promised that the University will continue to support and encourage the empowerment of young persons on the island.
“This is not the last time we will work together. It is a long-term partnership. We’ve done 35 years so far on the island and we intend to do a lot more,” Dr. Sean Callanan.
