Petra completed her Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Amsterdam, followed by both the Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Veterinary Medicine (Equine Health Care) at Utrecht University. During her studies, she worked as a student assistant in the operating theatre during emergency hours and was actively involved in the Foal Brigade for several years.
After graduation in 2015, she completed an internship at Wolvega Equine Hospital, followed by a rotating internship and residency in Equine Internal Medicine at Utrecht University. During her internships and residency, she gained extensive experience in equine anesthesia and intensive care. From 2022 to 2025, she led the Equine Anesthesia, Analgesia, and Intensive Care Department and was actively involved in the mentoring and guidance of interns and residents. Her clinical and research interests are broad, with particular emphasis on postoperative care, intensive care medicine, neonatology, and gastrointestinal disease in horses and donkeys.
In 2023, she became a Diplomate of the European College of Equine Internal Medicine (ECEIM), and in December 2024, she received her University Teaching Qualification. In January 2026, Petra joined Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine.
