The Veterinary Medical College Application Service (VMCAS) allows aspiring veterinarians to apply to multiple veterinary schools with one application—including Ross Vet.

What Is VMCAS?

The American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) sponsors VMCAS to help streamline the veterinary school application process. It allows prospective students to complete one application that can then be used for multiple schools.

How Does VMCAS Work?

You only need to fill out your VMCAS application once. Then, your application is submitted to the AAVMC, who verifies application accuracy and sends it out to your chosen veterinary schools. Once they have received your application, the schools follow their admissions process—reviewing, interviewing, and accepting students.

Does Ross Vet Use VMCAS?

Yes. Ross Vet accepts VMCAS applications for all three of our start dates—January, May, and September. To apply to Ross Vet with VMCAS, simply choose us as one of the schools you’d like your application sent to.

If you prefer to apply to Ross Vet directly—or outside of the VMCAS application cycle—we also have our own online application. If you apply with your VMCAS application, you do not need to fill out a separate Ross Vet application.

There are three dates that are crucial to know: when VMCAS opens, when you can begin applying to veterinary schools, and when VMCAS closes. At Ross Vet, we recommend filing your VMCAS application as soon as possible. This will lead to an earlier review process, so you can get your decision sooner.

After submitting your application, be on the lookout for any communication from your chosen vet schools.

Ross Vet Admissions Requirements

Make sure you meet the following requirements before applying to Ross Vet.

A minimum of 48 college credits when you apply, including veterinary school prerequisites. You can apply with up to two courses pending.
A grade of C- or better in prerequisite courses. Courses completed within 10 years of your application are preferred but not required.

Transcripts

Do not wait until the deadline to request your transcripts. The VMCAS requires you to include official transcripts from any previous institution you have attended. These transcripts must come from the institution directly. VMCAS does not accept transcripts that are sent from anyone or any organization that is not the institution.

Letters of Recommendation

VMCAS letters of recommendation highlight your qualities, qualifications, and abilities. The letters are submitted by the person writing them. You are required to provide at least three letters, and may have a maximum of six. Ross Vet requires at least one letter from a professor and one letter from a veterinarian you have worked with.

We recommend choosing evaluators with a strong understanding of your academic and veterinary potential. Former professors and veterinarians you have worked with are strong suggestions. Letters from people in positions of authority, like a department chair, may carry more weight as well.

Importantly, you do not need to wait for your letters of recommendation to arrive before you submit your application.

VMCAS Personal Statement

Your application will include a one-page personal statement, no longer than 3,000 characters. Your essay should tell a clear and personal story about why you want a career in veterinary medicine. Make sure to outline how your experiences could translate to your education, and focus on showing how you’ve grown along your journey from loving animals to wanting to make a career caring for them.

Experiences and Work History

You’ll include details on your experiences in a number of areas, including animal experiences (those without a vet involved, like husbandry, ranching, or 4H participation), veterinary and research experiences, your employment history, and extracurriculars you’re involved in.

This is not just a log of the hours you’ve spent—it’s a way to demonstrate how everything you’ve done so far has helped prepare you for veterinary school.

Ross Vet requires at least 150 hours of working with animals to apply.

What Happens After You Submit Your Application

After your application is submitted, it will be verified. During the VMCAS verification process, your coursework is used to create a standardized set of GPAs so that you and all other VMCAS candidates can be compared fairly. This can take up to 10 business days to complete. Your verified application is then sent to the schools you selected.

Once we receive your application, you’ll be invited to join the My Ross Vet digital community, your go-to place for tracking your application status and staying on top of your academic journey. Just be sure to use the same email you used for your VMCAS application so everything connects smoothly.

Ross Vet Admissions Review

Ross Vet uses a standardized process to review applications, including VMCAS.

After receiving your application, our admissions team will conduct a thorough review. If you meet our initial requirements, you will be invited to a personal interview. A summary of your interview will be sent along with your application to our admissions committee.

Our admissions team will notify you of any other decision.
