Financial Clarity on Your Journey to Becoming a DVM

Your Calling Is Clear. Your Financing Should Be, Too.

Becoming a DVM is more than a degree, it’s a commitment to a life of service. At Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, we believe financial clarity is part of preparing for that responsibility.

This page walks you through how paying for your DVM school works, how upcoming federal changes may affect you, and which funding options can help you stay focused on your journey.

Federal Loan Changes — Navigating What’s Ahead, Together

Beginning July 1, 2026, new federal legislation will eliminate the Grad PLUS loan program and introduce a $200,000 lifetime cap on Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans for professional students.

What does that mean? Federal aid alone may not cover the full cost of veterinary school.

You are not navigating this alone. Our Financial Services team is here to help you understand your options, build a personalized funding plan, and help you move forward with confidence.

I am an existing student, will this affect me?

As a current Title IV loan borrower, you may feel minimal impact. You’ll retain access to existing loan options until either the expected time remaining in your program ends or three academic years have passed, whichever comes first. Keep in mind that changes to your enrollment status could affect existing lending options, so contact a financial adviser to understand your situation.

What is changing under OB3?

New students starting their professional programs after June 30, 2026, will no longer have access to Grad Plus loans. Prospective students should connect with a financial adviser to discuss the cost of attendance and lending options available to assist in reaching graduation and beyond.

Understanding the Investment in Your DVM

Veterinary school is a meaningful investment — in your future and in the patients you will serve.

Each academic year, Ross Vet establishes a certified Cost of Attendance (COA). This determines the maximum financial aid, federal and private, you may be eligible to receive.

Your COA may include:

  • Tuition and mandatory fees
  • Housing and meals
  • Books, supplies, and technology
  • Health insurance
  • Travel and personal expenses

Transparency matters. Knowing the full picture allows you to plan wisely and stay focused on your purpose.

How Ross Vet Students Fund Their Education

No two journeys look exactly the same. Most students layer multiple funding sources over time — and we help you build the strategy that fits your goals.

You have options. And you have a team.

Federal Student Loans*

For many U.S. students, federal loans are the starting point due to built-in borrower protections and flexible repayment options.

Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans (annual and lifetime limits apply)

Grad PLUS Loans for students enrolled prior to July 1, 2026 (available for up to three academic years or until graduation)

*For those who apply and qualify.

Private Student Loans

When federal funding doesn’t cover the full cost of attendance, private loans may help bridge the gap.

Ross Vet partners with Sallie Mae, a lender experienced in supporting graduate and professional students from enrollment through residency.

Scholarships

Scholarships are designed to support future physicians who are ready to serve.

They can reduce out-of-pocket costs and may be combined with federal and private funding , especially important as federal lending structures evolve.
