Q: What inspired you to pursue veterinary medicine?

Growing up in Santiago, Chile, I was surrounded by a family that valued education and the wonders of the natural world. My father, a retired Professor of Chemistry, and my mother, a social worker and psychologist, filled our home with books about science, animals, plants, and the cosmos. My early fascination with science was nurtured by attending my dad's lectures and watching shows by Carl Sagan and Jacques Cousteau. My sister, who also became a veterinarian, provided a firsthand view of the beauty and challenges of the veterinary field. These experiences, combined with my love for nature, animals and scientific exploration, inspired me to pursue a career in veterinary medicine.

Q: You mentor young women in STEM through the 1000 Girls, 1000 Futures Program. What drew you to this mentorship role, and what impact have you seen from the program?

I was drawn to the “1000 Girls, 1000 Futures Program” because of my passion for closing the gender gap in STEM fields. The program aims to empower young women by providing them with mentorship, resources, and opportunities to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. As a mentor, I guide and support these young women, helping them navigate their academic and professional journeys. I share my experiences, provide advice, and encourage them to pursue their dreams despite any obstacles they may face.

Q: What has been the most rewarding aspect of guiding young women in STEM, and how has it influenced your own journey?

The most fulfilling part of mentoring young women in STEM is witnessing their growth and success. Seeing them overcome challenges, gain confidence, and achieve their goals is incredibly rewarding. It's inspiring to know that I can make a positive impact on their lives and help them realize their potential. Mentoring allows me to share my knowledge and experiences, and in return, I learn from their perspectives and aspirations.

Q: In addition to mentoring, you’re involved in Pawsibilities Vet Med, which supports students from all backgrounds. Can you share how this initiative is helping future veterinarians build confidence and find their place in the profession?

Pawsibilities Vet Med is another program for students and colleagues in the veterinary profession, not just women or girls, but everyone with an emphasis of those from marginalized communities.

Q: Ross Vet is known for its strong sense of community and support. What opportunities exist for students who want to engage, grow, and make a difference during their time here?

Ross Vet is committed to creating a supportive environment through various initiatives and programs. We offer scholarships and support services for underrepresented students, host events and workshops that promote cultural awareness, and provide mentorship opportunities to help students succeed. Additionally, we encourage students to participate in community outreach programs and join student organizations that help build a supportive and welcoming community for all students.

Q: Many aspiring veterinarians will read this interview. What advice would you give to those preparing for a career in this field?

My advice to current and future veterinary students is to embrace change and seek out opportunities to learn from different perspectives. Be open to new experiences and challenges, and don't be afraid to ask for help or mentorship, allyship and sponsorship. Remember that every "no" is just a step towards finding the right path and that persistence and resilience are key to success. Stay curious, stay passionate, and always strive to make a positive impact in the veterinary field.
