Adtalem Global Education Partners with Bishop’s University in Canada to Address Physician and Veterinarian Shortages

Jun 29, 2022

CHICAGO –  June 29, 2022 – Three Adtalem Global Education institutions have entered a partnership with Bishop’s University in Quebec, Canada, to help address a need for qualified veterinarians and medical doctors in Canada due to a critical shortage. Through the collaboration, Bishop’s University undergraduate students will be eligible for direct admission and scholarships at American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC), Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM) and Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM).

  • In 2019, an estimated 4.6 million Canadians do not have a regular primary care physician or family health-care team, which has spillover effects into other parts of the health-care system.i
  • According to the Canadian Veterinary Workforce Study, the Canadian veterinary workforce must grow at a rate of 3.5-4% annually to keep pace with veterinary demands.ii

“Adtalem Global Education is committed to opening up educational pathways for deserving and qualified students who aspire to help their communities,” said John Danaher, M.D., president of Adtalem Medical and Veterinary. “We are proud to partner with institutions like Bishop’s University who share a desire to innovate where students and communities can benefit.

Bishop’s University offers more than 100 programs of study. The partnership will connect qualified students with the three Adtalem universities that offer a high-quality international education experience in a collaborative community setting. Students benefit from immersive community health projects, clinical training in the Caribbean, United States and United Kingdom, and unique research-based initiatives.

Bishop’s University students interested in a career in medicine may consider AUC in Sint Maarten or RUSM in Barbados. Canadian residents are also eligible for AUC’s UK Track program in Preston, United Kingdom. Seven percent of the student population at AUC and RUSM come from Canada. Since 2012, 65 RUSM Canadian students have earned residencies across Canada, including surgery at the University of Toronto, family medicine at the University of British Columbia, pediatrics at McMaster University, and anesthesiology at the University of Manitoba Medicine.

“This partnership with Adtalem offers a great alternative for outstanding students who wish to pursue veterinary and medical studies outside of Canada,” explains Dr. Kerry Hull, Dean of Science at Bishop’s University. “This partnership highlights our commitment to student success both at Bishop’s and beyond.”

Adtalem institutions are dedicated to healthcare workforce solutions that actively partner with mission driven organizations to address future workforce needs, lift educational barriers, and empower career development. All three Adtalem institutions offer flexible start dates three times a year. Bishop’s University students are eligible to apply for the September 2022 semester.
