Mel Lean, DVM, BSc, MSc, MRCVS
Hailing from Abersoch in North Wales, UK, Mel set about her early equine career qualifying as a British Horse Society Riding Instructor which provided opportunities to travel and work abroad with performance & competition horses. Mel obtained a 1st Class Honours Degree in Equine Sports Science from the University of West of England in 2007, also winning the ‘Dengie Horse Feeds Equine Sports Science Student of the year award’.
Following this, Mel embarked on a Master’s programme in Equine Science at Aberystwyth University gaining a Master’s Degree with Merit in 2011. Focussing in the field of immunology Mel was able work at the GLUCK Equine Research Institute in Lexington, Kentucky, subsequently publishing her research.
Later graduating from the University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest in 2018 Mel went on to publish her DVM thesis work conducted in conjunction with Rossdales Equine Hospital in Newmarket, England.
After a year in general equine practice, Mel undertook and completed a one-year rotating equine internship with Towcester Equine Vets, UK. Following which Mel continued to work a busy role as an ambulatory, first opinion equine veterinarian in the UK at several equine practices. With a passion for teaching, she has worked with RUSVM in the fall of 2024 and Spring of 2025, before joining the equine team full-time in the fall of 2025.
