My research focuses on integrating bioinformatics, genomics, and microbiome science to investigate host-microbe interactions, antimicrobial resistance, and gene expression in agricultural and veterinary contexts. I am currently co-investigator and key personnel in intramural projects on antimicrobial biosynthetic gene clusters in bovine endometritis and the forensic applications of pig carcass microbiomes. My work involves training MSc students in metagenomics and whole-genome sequencing methods while leading bioinformatics analyses across multiple projects. This includes characterizing endometrial microbiomes in dairy cows with puerperal metritis, proteomic profiling of bovine endometrial epithelial cells, and genome characterization of Dermatophilus congolensis for antimicrobial resistance and virulence factors. Additionally, I have conducted RNA-Seq analyses to assess gene expression changes in D. congolensis under antibiotic treatment. My expertise extends to statistical consulting, R-based data analysis, and qRT-PCR for assessing genetic susceptibility to skin cancer in equines. Passionate about knowledge dissemination, I have developed and led metagenomics workshops to equip faculty and students with essential bioinformatics skills. Through these interdisciplinary projects, I aim to advance our understanding of host-microbe interactions and contribute to veterinary and agricultural sciences.
I am co-supervisor to a MSc student, providing supervision, mentorship, and 1-1 teaching for analysis of 16S metagenomic data, whole-genome resequencing and antimicrobial gene cluster prediction analysis. As a consequence, thesis, paper and oral and poster presentations have become outputs from this teaching activity. In addition, I co-chair Graduate journal club and participate in students journal club.
